The government is killing us in the name of safety. One such example of this can be found in the $9800 car that gets 41 MPG; that the United States will not allow its citizens to purchase.
The Chevrolet “Sail” is a practical, decent, and economical unit that gets an average of 41 MPG. A Reuters report states: “The U.S. automaker plans to export as many as 130,000 China-made vehicles this year, up from 77,000 vehicles in 2012, driven by demand for its Chevrolet Sail in other emerging markets….The Sail, which was co-developed with partner SAIC Motor Corp, became an instant hit when it was launched in January 2010. It is the first foreign brand in China with a price tag below 60,000 yuan ($9,800).”
The car is currently being sold in China with new markets being opened up in Columbia, Ecuador, and India. So why it is not sold in the United States? Because the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) standards make the Sail “illegal” in the United States. The Federal government isn’t content to let grown men and women decide what “level” of safety they would choose so an overwhelming and intrusive government will force the “safety” upon them.
Columnist Eric Peters reports: “The fact of the matter is that almost any car sold in this country as recently as five years ago would likely not pass muster with current “safety” requirements. Go back ten years and none would make the cut. Think about that. A model year 2003 S-Class Mercedes sedan would be considered “unsafe” . . . by current standards. But was it actually unsafe? Of course not. And neither was a 1993 S-Class Benz.”
But even if the obstacles thrown in the way by the DOT were eliminated; the EPA also barks at the heels of the carmakers (and jacks up the price to the consumer) by having their own ridiculous “standards” that must legally be met. Peters continues:
“The Sail would probably meet the EPA/DOT standards in effect circa 1990 – by which time new cars were so “clean” that only about 5 percent of what came out of the tailpipe was other than water vapor and carbon dioxide (an inert gas that has nothing to do with the formation of smog). Since that time, the EPA has pursued a policy of diminishing returns by insisting that the remaining 5 percent of the exhaust stream that’s not water vapor and C02 be “controlled.” Instead of a $200 catalytic converter, a $70 oxygen sensor and a $500 throttle body fuel injection system – which cleaned up 90 percent of the exhaust – it’s $500 a piece for multiple close-coupled cats, $2,000 for direct gas injection (and so on) to get a 1 percent (if that) additional reduction. But that’s not the way it’s presented to the public. EPA will instead say that its newest mandate will “cut new car emissions by 50 percent.” Which is technically true. But what EPA never tells you is that they mean 50 percent off the remaining 3-5 percent of tailpipe emissions that are not yet “controlled.” In other words, a fractional reduction – at ever-increasing cost to consumers. But that doesn’t sound as good as saying the new edict will “cut new car emissions by 50 percent.” So it’s not said.”
Instead what we get is governmental “sleight of hand” at its worst. The “50 percent reduction” in all honesty is a reduction from 95 percent to 97.5 percent clean. Technically the 2.5 percent can be presented as a 50 percent decrease because the 2.5 percent is 50 percent of 5. Ridiculous, confusing, and misleading. Not to mention completely unnecessary.
Is this miniscule reduction in emissions worth the thousands upon thousands of dollars that are added to cost of the car? A cost that is then passed on to already financially strapped consumers? The government in collusion with the environmental lobby says “yes.” Once again it’s a clear cut case of the government stepping in to “save” us and our planet from a dire and impending doom. But of course the problem is that it’s a fictitious doom largely invented by the environmentalists themselves. Somehow their “work” must be justified. Regarding the effects of emissions on so-called man-made global warming, columnist Thomas Sowell writes,
“While the public has been led to believe that "all" the leading scientists buy the global warming hysteria and the political agenda that goes with it, in fact the official reports from the United Nations or the National Academy of Sciences are written by bureaucrats -- and then garnished with the names of leading scientists who were "consulted," but whose contrary conclusions have been ignored. There is no question that the globe is warming but it has warmed and cooled before, and is not as warm today as it was some centuries ago, before there were any automobiles and before there was as much burning of fossil fuels as today. None of the dire things predicted today happened then.”
But that doesn’t stop the EPA from continuing to raise standards and tighten the noose on the American consumer. Sadly, if you want the “freedom” to purchase the Chevy Sail you will have to move to a nation that grants its citizens the “freedom” to buy it. Like communist China.
Is this what America has become? Unfortunately it is and it’s getting worse by the day. Our government is killing us in the name of safety. An over-reaching “nanny” state tells us what we can eat, what we can drive, and how we must live. The idea of personal responsibility and individual liberty is lost on an albatross government that craves power and control and is not above using physical or financial coercion to maintain and increase their authority.
IN an interview with Peter Robinson of the Hoover Institution, Sowell was asked what he thought of global warming. He answered:
“I think global warming is a classic example of the need for crusades……I read the original U.N. study years ago and I was curious about how they were going to deal with the question that the temperatures went up first, then there was the increase in carbon monoxide; because you can’t say that A causes B if B happened first. I could see that they were ‘tip-toeing through the tulips’ in the way they phrased things. They couldn’t confront that and now we are finding out that they knew darn well they couldn’t confront that.”
Robinson observes (to Sowell’s agreement):
“So it fits the pattern of a group of intellectuals, climate scientists who have a very narrow competency; suddenly proclaiming that there’s a crises, scaring the rest of us and thereby creating a demand for their services. Not as climate scientists alone but as a high-priestly caste that can tell us all how to live and save the entire planet. And in the meantime generate billions of dollars in government programs to fund their research initiatives. So it’s a racket.”
The bottom line is that the government is financially killing us by keeping us safe. They are financially killing us by artificially driving up the cost of goods through ludicrous and overbearing regulations heaped upon the manufacturers. They are financially killing us by an ever increasing tax burden that forces us to pay for these regulatory agencies. And they are financially killing us by thwarted competition which is always a plus for the consumer as businesses are force to lower prices in order to compete.
The average working person in America today would have a hard time buying a new car, as many of them are priced as high as the average annual salary. And the more government gets involved the more expensive products, such as cars, become. And in turn, the more jobs that end up overseas in countries where the governments aren’t as overbearing to the businesses trying to produce the products.
Certainly there are many factors that go into the cost of a car. Labor, material, research and development, and other factors come into play. But added burden and cost; initiated by a government that needs to butt out; only causes problems for Americans. The government’s regulations are making goods more expensive by strapping standards upon us that we didn’t ask for and do not need. Let us be free men and women again. Let us decide with our pocketbooks how “safe” we want out cars to be. Let us pay for extra features if we want them and bypass certain features if we so choose. Let us be the men and women we are, without the “nanny” state constantly trying to control us like we’re infants. Whatever happened to the idea of liberty? Whatever happened to American freedom? And above all, why……why is the government killing us by keeping us “safe”?
