Recently I heard someone make the statement, “Nothing lasts forever!” This is certainly true in most cases. A winning streak ends and the coach will say, “Nothing lasts forever.” Or a job will be lost and the newly unemployed will say, “Nothing lasts forever.” Or a life will be lost and the bereaved will say, “Nothing lasts forever.” In most cases this is true. But there is something that lasts forever. Eternity lasts forever. “Forever” lasts forever. And your eternal soul will spend “forever” somewhere. And do you know how long you will be there? Forever.
The Bible is crystal clear about there being two eternal destinations. We typically refer to them as Heaven and Hell. Heaven is a place of absolute perfection. No sin, nor sorrow, nor pain, nor sickness is there. Those who go to Heaven enter into the very presence of the Triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And the only way to attain this is by the grace of God, through faith in the Son of God Jesus Christ. Sinners like us are called to turn from our sin in repentance and submit to the Lordship of Christ over all things, by faith. We love and follow Jesus in this temporal life and we experience His eternal presence in the next life. The Bible says this about Heaven: “There will no longer be any curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will serve Him; they will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads. And there will no longer be any night; and they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illumine them; and they will reign forever and ever.” (Revelation 22:3-5 NASB) But the Bible is also clear about another possible destination.
Jesus spoke of a time when those who have rejected Him would face judgment: “Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels.” (Matthew 25:41 NASB) This condition is also described as being “eternal.” Heaven never ends. Neither does Hell. This is something you should deeply consider today while you still have breath in your lungs.
Nothing lasts forever.....except “forever.” Forever lasts forever and it is barreling toward you. “Forever” is inescapable. “Forever” is unavoidable. “Forever” will be spent somewhere. Your soul will exist “forever.” Will it reside in Heaven or in Hell? Consider this today and turn to Christ and be saved from your sins. Then you'll be able to think about “forever” and look longingly for it's arrival.
