One night, Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews, came to Jesus to inquire about who he was. Renowned as a leading rabbi in Jerusalem, Nicodemus was undoubtedly accustomed to people coming to him for counsel. While we don't know with certainty what might have sparked Nicodemus' interest, we do know that he received a theological lesson that few have ever had the privilege to hear. And he heard it from the Lord of Glory Himself.
Jesus told him: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3) Of course this statement is true in a couple of different ways. First of all, you can't “see the kingdom” in the sense of being able to perceive what it really is....unless you are born again. In other words, to understand “spiritual” realities there must be a new “spiritual” birth that takes place within you. The Apostle Paul echoed this sentiment when he wrote: “A natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.” (1 Corinthians 2:14 NASB) To understand the kingdom, which is to “see” it or to “perceive” it; you must be born again.
Of course it is likewise true that “seeing the kingdom” can mean to attain or to enter the kingdom. In other words, you cannot truly be a part of the Lord's kingdom, either on earth or in Heaven, unless you are born again. To be saved you must be born again. It is only through this new birth, brought about by the Holy Spirit, that you can understand spiritual realities and enter into Heaven when you die. Nicodemus had to be born again. So do you.
The big word for being “born again” is regeneration. It means to be brought to life. Spiritually speaking we are born “dead in our trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1) and have not the capacity to truly love and follow the Lord. This new life is required and ultimately, can only be granted, by the Lord Himself.
Have you been born again? Examine your life and see if there is a love for the Lord and a desire to daily follow Him. Pray that the Lord would change your heart and give you the Spirit to guide you. Apart from this new birth you will never see the kingdom. And eternity hinges upon it. Seek the Lord and be saved today.
