The 2016 presidential race reminds me of two political leaders from Old Testament times. Hillary Clinton is the spitting image of Jezebel, the demented Queen-wife of King Ahab, who perpetually lied, murdered, and was so blinded by ambition that she destroyed herself and those around her.
The irony of Jezebel is that it wasn’t just her. It was her and her husband who made for a corrupt one-two punch in Israel. This dual-corruption could be seen on one occasion when King Ahab sought the land of a local citizen who refused to sell. Jezebel took care of the situation in short order by trumping up phony charges of blasphemy, having the man executed, and then seizing his land in a grand example of theft (see 1 Kings 21). (It was "imminent domain" before "imminent domain" was cool). Lies, murder, thievery, and ambition. Sounds an awful lot like Hillary, does it not?
Hillary’s top "chink in her armor" is the fact that she is a compulsive liar and everybody knows it. The hacked WikiLeaks emails confirm what everyone already knew. Hillary will say one thing to one group behind closed doors and say the exact opposite in her public speeches. When confronted with this reality by Donald Trump, Hillary brazenly compared herself to Abraham Lincoln in citing that Lincoln also said different things to different groups when he was trying to raise support to end slavery. Of course Abe didn’t need to raise support because he issued, what amounted to an “executive order” in his Emancipation Proclamation. The historical record also shows “Honest Abe” was almost as deceptive as “Crooked Hillary” on many issues, but that’s beside the point. Trump rightly pointed out the laughable hypocrisy that Hillary would blame her own dishonesty, evidenced in her private speeches to Goldman Sachs and other banks, on Abraham Lincoln. She seriously tried to deflect her deceit by invoking the name of Lincoln and bringing up the topic of slavery. I guess if all else fails and you get caught red-handed…… bring up slavery! Just make sure you don’t point out that the slave-freeing Lincoln was actually a Republican.
Old Testament Jezebel was not only a liar; she was also a murderer. She sought to exterminate the prophets of Israel who spoke the truth of God’s Word and prophesied in ways that opposed her and her depraved husband. Hillary has likewise spent 30 years railing against all things Godly. She will attack free speech and freedom of religion. She will empower politically correct “thought police” who will enforce “hate crimes” against pastors who speak God’s Word. She has unbelievably defended the cause of abortion, even the heinous and barbarous act of “partial-birth” abortion which is the killing of a baby, WHILE IT IS BEING BORN! Vice Presidential candidate Mike Pence, rightly brought that issue up in the VP debate. But Hillary doubles down on the issue of abortion. She gloats proudly of her support for “women’s rights” even as her policies have led to the brutal murder of millions of little “women” who die in the womb. But it’s not just little women she destroys. It’s the older ones as well.
Trump held a press conference prior to the 2nd debate in which he was seated with Juanita Broaddrick, Paula Jones, Katherine Willey, and Kathy Shelton; all women who were victims of Bill and Hillary’s unspoken war on women. Bill has been accused of sexual assault and rape, time and time again. Because of his power and position, he has historically gotten away with it. Occasionally he has to admit to something, or settle out of court. But the reality of his degeneracy is not mere accusation but proven fact. Indeed, in 1998 he was impeached for lying under oath about his sexual tryst and harassment of White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Many forget that he was having sex in the oval office bathroom when he was supposed to be running the country. And of course Hillary defended him, saying the accusations were a part of a “vast right wing conspiracy.” Of course she knew better. Their political marriage makes for quite a “power couple” but his numerous dalliances with women is not lost on her.
As for Trump, he has historically been profane and vulgar. But not to be outdone, Hillary has left a record of language that would make a sailor blush. Former Secret Service agents, FBI agents, body guards, and underlings have written frequently about her bombastic tirades and profanity laced temper fits over the years. While Trump may or may not have the best temperament to serve as President; it is beyond question that Hillary does not. To see a sampling of some of the vulgar things she has said, click this link. BUT BE WARNED: her language is graphic and debased. If bad words offend you, then don’t click on it.
Now for Trump. I compare him to the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar for several reasons. First of all, he is extraordinarily wealthy and for years has lived like a King. In other words, since he has not been an elected official he has not been as accountable as others might be. While he is extremely opinionated, he is not very politically correct. This is something he wears as a badge of honor; as one who tells it like it really is. Of course this can be a virtue and a vice. Not being a politician, Trump has tended to say anything he wants without thinking of the ramifications of his statements. His has spoken in an unguarded and foolish fashion.
In a recent leaked audio of Trump from 2005, he can be heard making vulgar statements about women. This is a clear example of his recklessness as a loose cannon who will say anything that enters his mind. And, in all truth, will probably say anything to impress someone, or to get a laugh. Lots of men are like that. And no one should defend what Trump said. His vulgar talk was truly reprehensible. But I’m SHOCKED that so many claim to be SHOCKED by his words. I’m even more shocked that the most recent audio they could find of Trump being profane was from 2005! Has he cleaned up over the last eleven years, or just not got caught? Trump called it “locker room banter” and that is clearly what it was. Is it excusable? Certainly not. But is it surprising? Only to those who have never been in a locker room.
Some women might have been stunned by the language, and rightly so. But any man who claims to be shocked by the language is either lying or he has lived a very sheltered life. While I am a pastor, I didn’t grow up locked away in a church sanctuary. I went to public school. I played sports for years (thus spending a lot of time in locker rooms); and as an adult I have worked in garages, factories, and sales offices. In all of these places, men talked exactly the way Trump talked. And anyone reading this who has spent any time around “real-world” non-Christians knows I’m right. So what is a Christian to do in such a dirty world? How is a Christian to live? Does he cover his ears and scream every time he hears a dirty word? Does he swear to never enter such a dirty world? Or does he arm himself spiritually and seek to be a witness in a dirty world? I go with the latter option. And as such I can’t act stunned every time I hear gutter talk. We can’t engage in it; but we also can’t be shocked when unbelievers like Trump and Hillary do.
Like Nebuchadnezzar, Trump is arrogant. Nebuchadnezzar looked out over his kingdom and smugly declared that “his hands” had created this vast kingdom. It’s reminiscent of how Trump talks about building a very successful company. Trump’s hard work should be commended. Nebuchadnezzar’s might be commended too. But both fail to realize that true financial blessings are controlled by a sovereign God. As is the appointment of Kings and Queens. It is God who “raises up and tears down” as Nebuchadnezzar found out all too painfully. Being frightened by a prophetic dream, Nebuchadnezzar was informed that he would be humbled and live like a cow for 7 years until he recognized the power of All-Mighty God. In time, he did just that. By the end of his humiliation, Nebuchadnezzar was praising the most-high God as the one who alone possessed absolute sovereignty. Nebuchadnezzar declared without reservation, that it was God who gives kingdoms to whomever He wishes. (See Daniel 4) Hopefully Trump will someday do likewise.
As painful as it might be to say, Christians should be praying for both Trump and Hillary to be convicted of their sin and born again by God’s spirit. Think of how this race would change if God was pleased to grant them both a new life in Christ? Impossible! You say. But the Bible says, “All things are possible with God.” (Mark 10:27)
There is one final comparison I would like to make between Trump and Nebuchadnezzar. The Babylonian king, while vile and profane, still had a Godly influence in his life. The prophet Daniel served the king with loyalty and faithfulness. When asked to interpret the dream that spoke of Nebuchadnezzar’s downfall, Daniel lamented, saying, “My lord, if only the dream applied to those who hate you and its interpretation to your adversaries!” (Daniel 4:19) Daniel also exhorted the King to turn from his sinful ways and trust in the Lord, saying “Break away now from your sins by doing righteousness and from your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor, in case there may be a prolonging of your prosperity.” (Daniel 4:27) Nebuchadnezzar was a vile man, who had Godly influence. And in God’s gracious, sovereign timing, Nebuchadnezzar’s life was changed. Donald Trump is also a morally vile man, who has been influenced by those who at least profess Christianity and exhibit righteousness. Ben Carson, Franklin Graham and others have at times had Trump’s ear. They’ve been roundly blasted for having anything to do with him. But they bravely see the “hand writing on the wall” and know what a Hillary administration will bring.
Trump’s hidden “gotcha” tape contained some extremely vulgar language for which he should apologize. He has apologized, repeatedly. He should be embarrassed over what he said. He has said he is embarrassed, repeatedly. He should be ashamed. He has said he is ashamed repeatedly. And strangely enough the group that has withheld forgiveness more than any other group are conservative, Christian Republicans who claim the blood of Christ as forgiveness for THEIR OWN depraved sins, but withhold it from Trump. That’s an interesting and unbiblical position to take. Some would argue that Trump is not genuine. Maybe he isn’t, but how do you know? Can you see into his heart? What more can he say than to apologize and vow to be a better man? Which he has done. Simon Peter once asked Jesus a question about forgiveness: "Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven." (Matt. 18:21-22) Some might argue that this is a personal example between two Christians because Peter says "Brother." But I would argue that if Christians are to forgive each other; how much MORE should we forgive repentant unbelievers? Jesus himself proclaimed from the cross: "Father forgive them for they know not what they do!" (Luke 23:37) And they weren't even SEEKING repentance. I fear the Christian vitriol against Trump is exposing a jaded and unforgiving heart on the part of many believers. Who talk about forgiveness and want it for themselves; but withhold it from someone whom they don't personally like and deem unworthy of forgiveness. That is not the Christian way of doing things. Does the RNC wish to have his head on a platter? Maybe Jezebel could arrange that, but no Christian should desire it.
Trump’s words were horrible. Hillary’s actions are more so. A cold-hearted woman who would defend the murder of babies in such arrogant fashion is far worse than a foul-mouthed old coot who crows too much when he’s got a crowd to impress. Or at least he did in 2005. And contrary to the media’s phony outrage, Trump didn’t say he DID the things he mentioned in the tape. He said he tried to hit on a married women and she shot him down. He said that famous people CAN get away with certain things with women, based solely on their fame. Sadly, this is true. Ask Bill Clinton and he could testify of that truth repeatedly. And Trump is correct in stating that Bill Clinton has actually DONE things much worse than Trump has merely talked about.
In conclusion, I will say this. Trump is a depraved man and Hillary is a depraved woman. We all might wish for better choices, but no such choices will be forthcoming in this election. When I consider a vile and vulgar man who has repeatedly apologized versus a vile and vulgar woman who refuses to --- for me it makes the choice easy. Why are Christians not DEMANDING that Hillary apologize for her support of partial-birth abortion? Why are Christians not DEMANDING that she step down from the ticket for bragging about murder? For bragging about defending a rapist? For bragging about how she lies to the public about her true views of Wall Street? Where is the outcry over Hillary? The Democrats won’t bring the outcry, even after it was proven she stole the primary from Bernie Sanders. The Republicans won’t bring the outcry, because they’re too afraid of the establishment’s status quo going away; and thus they lose their gravy train. The Christians won’t bring the outcry because they’re too distracted by eleven-year-old comments from an apologetic man to see the everyday corruption of an unapologetic and brazen women. Jezebel…… Versus Nebuchadnezzar. It makes for a strange election cycle. Who will win? Only God knows. But at this point it’s only Nebuchadnezzar who seems to have ANY righteous influence whatsoever. Jezebel is planning to slither her way into the White House, just as she and Ahab did once before. And sadly, many conservative Christians might be the ones who end up putting her there.
