The vast majority of people in the world today are dead…and they don’t even know it. Not physically dead mind you, but spiritually dead. In fact, the Bible teaches that all of us are spiritually dead unless God brings life to our soul. The book of Ephesians tells us: “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.” (Ephesians 2:1-3 ESV)
There are certain traits that mark the spiritually dead. For one thing, they have no desire to attend church. While a litany of excuses may be offered, many of which may be valid, those who are spiritually dead will simply have no desire to fellowship, nor worship with Christians.
Furthermore, the spiritually dead have no desire for godly living. While some may life very moral lives, their reasoning for it is not that they love and wish to follow God. They simply are living how they were raised. Morality may be well and good, but morality which doesn’t originate from a love for God may be nothing more than legalism. The Pharisees were a very moral group of people, and yet they put Jesus to death.
So what about you? Are you spiritually dead? You may very well be and not even know it. Or you may know it and not care. Which further proves the point. Your lack of care confirms your condition. The only hope for you or anyone else is for God to show you mercy. Perhaps he is even now drawing and convicting you by His Spirit. Cry out to Him for mercy. Turn from your sin in repentance and commit your life to Jesus Christ. Find grace. Find joy. And find life. Real life. You know what its like to be physically alive. Now turn to Christ and learn what its like to arise from spiritual death unto life eternal.
