The Bible often uses analogies involving animals to describe various people in the Bible. For example, Christians are referred to as “sheep” in numerous places. With Jesus as our shepherd we love, follow, and obey Him. The word “goats” is used to describe unbelievers in an analogy that Jesus used regarding what will happen in the end (see Matthew 25:32). Jesus will separate people like a shepherd would separate sheep and goats to put them in separate pastures. Believers will enter paradise with the Lord; while unbelievers will enter eternal misery in Hell.
Another animal used as an analogy is the lion. And it is used in both a positive and negative way. Satan is described as one who “prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8) And Satan may indeed devour some people, but he won't ultimately devour the Lord's sheep. Because Jesus is also described as a lion. The Apostle John is described in Revelation as weeping, because there was a book in Heaven that none could open. But he was told, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals.” (Revelation 5:5) This “lion” is none other than Christ Himself. He overcame. He left the glories of Heaven and became a man who lived a sinless life. He then died a sacrificial death to pay the sin price for those who truly trust in Him. Which is why He is not only described as a lion; but also as a lamb. The very next verse in Revelation says this: “And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain.” (Revelation 5:6)
Jesus is both a lion and a lamb. He overcomes and He condescends. He possesses infinite power (since He is the Son of God) and He displayed perfect humility (in laying His life down as an atoning sacrifice). Do you know this lion? And have you been bought by this lamb? Or are you in the very process of being devoured by another lion. A lion who does not care about your well being, but instead would destroy you.
You have no hope in this life or the next, apart from Jesus Christ. Have you turned from your sin in repentance and submitted to His lordship by faith? Have you been awakened to the glories of Christ and are you now following Him in loving obedience? Lions can be scary; but this lion is glorious and gracious. Trust in Him and Him alone. Believe and be saved.
