Even the bravest among us might succumb to fear at times. And the most cowardly among us live in a constant state of fear. Regardless of which category you might fall into (brave, cowardly, or somewhere in between); the Bible has the remedy for your concerns. The Bible actually has a lot to say about dealing with fear, but the passage I'll mention today was written by King David, before he was the king.
In his younger days, David was a warrior; most famous for killing the Philistine giant Goliath. David's fame grew to such an extent that the Bible says girls sang songs about him. He was the teenage heartthrob of his day; and a national hero. But King Saul was envious of him and sought to take his life. David fled and spent many years on the run. On one occasion he hid out in the city of Gath, which ironically was the hometown of Goliath. Immediately the townspeople recognized him and his life was in grave danger. This was the occasion for his writing Psalm 56. Read his words and be encouraged: “When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise; In God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid. What can mere man do to me?” (Psalm 56:3-4)
David's response to fear was simple, yet profound. What is the first thing you do when you're afraid? It's not to call the doctor (that might come seconds later); it's not to look to the government (that's a shaky solution at best); and it's not to bury your head in the sand and pretend your problem will go away. When you are scared, you are to PUT YOUR TRUST IN GOD.
When you immediately turn to the Lord, it will put your problems in perspective. Yes, your problems might be big; but your God is infinitely bigger. Furthermore, if you are a Christian, then as you look to God you should be reminded that this world is not your home, and your eternal home will be in the Lord's glorious presence. If you mediate on that thought long enough, your next thought might be what David's was: “What can mere man do to me?” (Psalm 56:4) Even if he kills me, he just sends me to eternal glory, where there will be no problems ever again.
The Days of Coronavirus are causing unprecedented changes and fear in America. At times you will be afraid, but don't give in to it. Look to the Lord. Trust in Him. And discover the peace that only He can provide.
