This past week the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) voted to “condemn the ‘Alt-Right’ and all forms of racism including white supremacy” at their annual convention in Phoenix. While the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) elected a left-leaning college professor who writes and speaks frequently on “white privilege” and “institutional racism.” Both of these moves show how far to the political left these once conservative denominations have lurched; and how social and political mantras take precedence over the gospel of Christ. SBC guru Russell Moore bemoans the “Alt-Right” as being “satanic” – but Satan is undoubtedly more gleeful that these denominations obsess over perceived racism at the expense of focusing on Christ. America, and indeed the world’s problem is not racism. Its problem is a rejection of Jesus which ruins the life and damns the soul.
The SBC is becoming more of a joke every year. Their numbers continue to dwindle, as leaders like Moore continue to steer the denomination leftward. It’s not that denouncing “white supremacy” is bad. In fact, 99.9999999 percent of the country would denounce it. It’s the fact that Moore and the SBC feel the CONSTANT need to bring the issue up, that is so annoying and distracting. Moore loves to manufacture problems that he can then “speak out against” thus making himself a hero to his fawning young supporters. And in so doing he also gets attention and ink from liberal media outlets such as the New York Times and the Huffington Post, which undoubtedly strokes his ego as well. In a tweet this week Moore said, “The so-called Alt-Right white supremacist ideologies are anti-Christ and satanic to the core. We should say so.” The problems with this statement are myriad.
First of all, Moore lumps every “Alt-Right” person into the category of white supremacy. Are there white supremacists who would be classified as “Alt-Right”? No doubt there are. But painting with such broad ideological strokes is both divisive and misleading. Furthermore, one has to wonder why Moore is not denouncing black supremacy and the racism that exudes from groups such as Black Lives Matter. It’s not hard to figure out the answer. Renouncing non-white racism would serve no purpose in pandering to the left-wing race-baiters Moore seeks to appease. And for all of the bemoaning of “Alt-Right” racism it should be noted that the only LEGAL form of racism in America is racism against whites through such government programs as affirmative action. While the SBC busies itself with speaking out against a largely non-existent problem, genuine racism boils in America while Moore and his cronies utter not a word against it. The militant black movement has become so empowered that some have demanded and received separate graduation ceremonies for black students who do not want whites to be a part of their education experience. Ironically, the past struggles for civil rights have been turned on their heads as some blacks now SEEK segregation because of their disdain for whites. In these cases, the problem is not “white privilege” but rather “white hatred.” You say, "This wouldn't happen in America today!" But you'd be wrong. It happened last month at Harvard University, as well as numerous other liberal cesspools. If the spineless SBC had the courage they pretend to have, they would renounce these types of “institutional racism” as much as they denounce the “Alt-Right.” But again, this would serve no purpose in their political pandering efforts.
In all likelihood, the REAL REASON for Moore and the SBC’s resolution against the “racism” of the “Alt-Right” is found in Moore’s personal hatred for Donald Trump. He constantly bemoaned and badgered Trump during the campaign; and infamously renounced all Trump supporters, implying they were racist (and perhaps not even truly Christian). Moore’s obnoxious behavior eventually did briefly get Trump’s attention as he swatted Moore away like a fly on his rear end by calling him a “nasty guy.” Moore then gleefully tweeted about it, seemingly overjoyed that Trump acknowledged his annoying presence. Moore seemed quite proud of himself. But his antics grew increasingly irritating to many in the SBC who grew tired of his criticisms and spoke out against Moore, nearly costing him his job as head of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. Moore’s hatred of Trump, and his bogus claims of racism obviously still remain, as seen in this week’s events at the convention.
I often wonder why Moore’s sycophantic followers never stop to ask him for examples of Trump’s racism? Is it that Trump (unlike Moore) has the nerve to speak out against radical Islam? Is it because Trump favors border-security? Is this what makes him a racist? And if so, how so? Shouldn’t the SBC take a stand on the Islamic murder of Christians, (or non-Christians for that matter)? Shouldn’t the SBC take a stand on illegal immigration? Or here’s a thought….maybe the SBC should pass a resolution calling for members to “pray for those in authority over us.” (see 1 Timothy 2:1-3) But perhaps they would prefer I keep the Bible out of their political gamesmanship. They are, after all, largely a political rather than a religious organization these days. And Moore is far more lobbyist for the left, than prophet for the truth.
Moore is entitled to his opinion, but his constant whining over largely manufactured racism is growing tiresome and distracting. Ironically, the black, agnostic actor Morgan Freeman seems to know better than Moore how to deal with perceived racism. In an interview with Mike Wallace, in which Freeman referred to Black History Month as “ridiculous” Freeman suggests how America can get past racism. Freeman simply tells Wallace to “stop talking about it” and start seeing people as people instead of constantly bringing up the issue of race. While some might see Freeman’s point as over-simplistic, it does breathe a fresh bit of air into the tired and stale mantra of white panderers like Moore. Indeed, on this topic, Moore the Christian could learn something from Freeman the Agnostic. That’s sad to say, but certainly true.
Unfortunately, Moore is not the only Christian leader to obsess over race at the expense of the gospel. The once conservative “Gospel Coalition” continues its dizzying mantra against the “Alt-Right” and anything they perceive as being supportive of Trump. I’ve written in the past that “The Gospel Coalition” is nothing more than a Christianized version of the Huffington Post. John Piper, once a bastion for the supremacy of God, has become another social commentator who now seems to spend more time talking about race than Christ. Thabiti Anywabile gets ample ink-space on The Gospel Coalition blog site where he can trash Trump as racist; while The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary holds “discussions” on racism in America with some of its black professors. It is interesting how so many black people have managed to gain high positions of prestige and power in a country that is supposedly as racist as ours. It reminds me of football star Colin Kaepernick’s complaints about racism, while he cashed million dollar checks in a country that pays him to sit on the bench and run his mouth. How sadly oppressed he was! And all of this under 8 years of a black president. Is white supremacy really that big of a problem in America? Worthy of a resolution from the SBC? Hardly.
Of course the New Testament church had members obsessed with racial issues as well. The Jews were enamored with "Jew stuff" (like circumcision, the Law, etc. - Acts 15) and Gentiles were obsessed with Gentile stuff (like making sure their widows were treated right - Acts 7). But the Apostles refused to take the bait from the Russell Moores of the day. They insisted that the church was not Jew or Gentile, but ONE in Christ. All sinners. All saved. One race. One blood is all that matters. They focused on Jesus, rather than the "Alt-Right."
In conclusion, I’m not saying that racism is non-existent in America today. But what I AM saying is Christian entities need to get off of this soapbox and start speaking out about ETERNAL issues. While Russell Moore whines about “racism” Christians continue to be killed and persecuted the world over. While Moore whimpers about the “Alt-Right”; Islamists continue their march toward world domination. And while the SBC passes “resolutions” that amount to nothing more than veiled shots at Trump -- genuine, eternal issues get ignored. Morgan Freeman is right on this one. Stop talking about racism! And stop using it as a political ploy and meal ticket to fame. Russell Moore and his cohorts have milked this issue enough, and the sad fact is that most of the country doesn’t really care what the SBC does anyway. Their resolutions are meaningless and their political stunts are divisive and self-glorifying. The SBC is becoming a joke and the only ones who don’t seem to realize it are the SBC leaders themselves. I pine for the days when the SBC focused on doctrine and the gospel. But today they have largely become another left-leaning religious organization that is nothing more than a shell of their former glory. And they have leaders like Moore to thank for that. Maybe the delegates to the convention should pass a resolution denouncing Moore and let him get on to the business he’s really interested in; which is leftward social issues and political hackery. Maybe he should move on from the SBC and find a new job in his true, ideological home the DNC. And let the SBC get back to the business of preaching the gospel.
