Miley Cyrus has made big news this
week. Again. At the MTV Video Music Awards she came onstage in what
amounted to nothing more than her underwear. Then sang a song with
very little words and a whole lot of action. I'm told she simulated
various sex acts onstage for all the world to see. I say that I'm
“told” this because I didn't see the display, nor will I. The
articles I read online, coupled with the still photographs I saw were
enough to tell the miserable tale. Miley Cyrus is out of control.
She has become a national joke. Even the left-wing liberals who
would normally embrace the crudeness of such a performance have
recoiled in disgust and laughed at her. To look at her is to feel
equal parts sadness, outrage, and disgust. Our society is sick; and
this is only the latest example of that.
From a spiritual perspective, it's perplexing to consider what Cyrus did. To go out in public looking like that and acting like that; one has to wonder if she is possessed by a demon or something. This is bizarre behavior, even by Hollywood standards. Or perhaps this is a sobering example of what happens when the “restraining grace” of God is removed. The fact is that all of us have the capacity to be far more evil than we are. God restrains these evil tendencies; because if He didn't we would see murder and perversion on such wide levels that society would crumble. But then again, it seems that society IS crumbling before our very eyes. At least American society is. And for this, there is plenty of blame to go around. Lets begin with parents.
When Miley finished her “performance” at the MTV awards; her mother leaped to her feet wildly applauding her daughter's “song.” A proud momma? Or a pathetic enabler? The fame and fortune that the Cyrus clan desired for their daughter has come. They got what they always wanted; but was this the end result they had in mind? Miley started out as the sweetsy little teeny-bopper known as “Hannah Montana” on the Disney Channel. But like most Hollywood child stars, it's just a matter of time before they go the “trashy” route. Similar things have happened with Britney Spears and Justin Bieber. It seems to me that a word of caution should be issued to parents regarding this matter. Be very careful about who you allow in front of your children's eyes to serve as their role models. That sweet little “wholesome” girl they're watching on Disney channel today could very well (and probably will) be simulating sex acts on stage for MTV tomorrow. And by then, you'll be doing damage control with your kids. By then you'll have some serious explaining to do as to why your kid's hero has suddenly become the latest tabloid star, drug addict, or garden variety slut. Satan is very seductive in this way. He will package a “star” as a sweet little girl; but parents need to wake up and use some discernment. Beneath the cute Disney clothes of Hannah Montana, beat the heart of a depraved vixen. One that would come to rotten fruition in time. How do I know she was and is depraved? Because she is a human; and such is the natural condition of all humans. (see Romans 3:23 and Ephesians 2:1-3) Sadly, most parents (like most kids) are more concerned with being thought “cool and faddish” than they are being thought “Christ-like and faithful.” This is expected with the spiritually lost of the world; it's disappointing when you see it from the Christian families as well.
Miley's father, Billy Ray Cyrus, is a “star” in his own right. He got his start in country music twenty years ago with his popular and deeply profound musical masterpiece (please note my sarcasm) known as “Achy Breaky Heart.” If you've never heard it, don't waste your time. It'll be a minute and twenty-seven seconds of your life you'll never get back. The asinine title of the song pretty much says it all. Billy Ray has very little musical talent or acting skills; and both of these “gifts” he passed on to his daughter. (At least that's my opinion.) After Miley's display the other night, Billy Ray offered up a “tweet” as well. What might you think a father would say at that point? He should be broken-hearted over what his daughter has become; and he should be guilt-ridden over his role in it. He wanted fame and fortune for her; and he got it. Today she's famous for wearing her underwear in public and simulating sex with a bunch of bozos on national TV.
If I were Miley's father I would have marched on stage with baseball bat in hand and “ended” this little charade. The male singers performing with her would have been bloodied; and I would have told my daughter to get off the stage and go put some clothes on. Hey, I would have ended up in jail; but some things are worth being locked up for, right? Instead of my scenario, Billy Ray tweeted this: “Thanking God for many blessings tonight. Praying for world peace. More love....less hate.” No offense to Billy Ray, but this sounds like a tweet from someone who is either severely mentally deranged or who is so doped up on “happy pills” that he is detached from the world around him. He is thanking God for many blessings? Maybe he meant the fact that God didn't drop a fiery millstone upon his daughter. Maybe he meant the financial blessings that he's been allowed to have at the expense of his family. World peace? Why is world peace the topic of the day for him when his daughter is publicly embarrassing herself? World peace? Seriously? “More love less hate”might be the liberal, showbiz nonsense of a man who wants to desperately change the subject. It seems that Mr. & Mrs. Cyrus need some severe counseling. Perhaps the session should start with a backhand to Billy Ray and a summons to WAKE UP YOU MORON! Do you see what's become of your little girl while you tweet about “world peace?” Do you dare invoke the name of “God” and His blessings when you and your family have wiped mental excrement on the minds of American TV viewers?
My closing thought is this. Miley Cyrus is indeed a sad case. No question she needs prayer; and there's no question about the fact that it would be glorious to see God show her grace and change her heart and life. He doesn't owe that to her, any more than He owes it to anyone else. Miley is currently quite proud of her MTV performance. She (or whoever tweets for her) tweeted after the show that she was proud of the fact that 306,000 people had “tweeted” about her. Apparently the producers of MTV also bragged on her and she expressed her happiness over that. It seems she's not cognizant of the fact that MTV is only making money off of her antics and that she is nothing but a tool to them. If only she knew better. Or if only she had parents to guide her away from such Hollywood wolves. Oh yeah, that's right. She DOES have parents. Mom is applauding her, while Dad tweets about world peace. While the daughters of America (along with their parents) long for the fame and fortune Miley possesses. Young ladies of America, let me encourage you to set your sights a little bit higher. If your parents are too enmeshed in the world to give you wise direction, let me point you to where you should go. Find you a Bible and open it up to Proverbs 31. Read it. Study it. Live it. Become it. Find some other women who are like minded and imitate them as they imitate Christ. If your parents are like Miley's then ignore their counsel because they don't have your best interest, nor God's glory in mind......And say a prayer for Miley. Only God can change what she has become. And only God can make her want that change.
